Most scroll effects stutter for the same reason: they animate properties that make the browser lay the page out again. Keep motion to transform and opacity, pin as little as possible, and test on the slowest phone you can borrow.
What to measure
Record a performance trace while scrolling, look for long frames, and fix the biggest one first. One heavy effect usually costs more than ten light ones.
